Family Fun-Fest Photos

Music, boats, food and children what more do you need? The community gathered at the old school house in Merigomish to enjoy a cardboard duct tape boat race. 4 participants threw themselves in their homemade boats and paddled or tried to paddle through the course. 3 out of the 4 did not make it far however the powerful paddlers made it to the finish line.

Musicians were plentiful: Doris Mason, Kim Dunn, Fleur Mainville, Allison Stewart, Chantal Sauliner, Bob Dean, Molly Thompson and Dave Dunn.

BBQ and a childrens fish pond were all a part of the activities.

Thank you to the District One Youth Council.

We look forward to next years Family Fun Fest.

Thank you from the MARSA TEAM

MARSA has been working to preserve and protect the Merigomish Schoolhouse for the benefit of the community since 2007.  MARSA will create a facility for tourism and community use. It has developed a long-term vision for the schoolhouse which will endeavor to sustain its viability and continued access for the community.

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to provide programming and accessibility to a multi purpose facility for members of the community. This would provide employment opportunities for the area through construction of the facility. As a venue for a variety of enterprising activities, it would support local businesses, population retention and a community attraction to draw in new residents and visitors.

To Date

Fundraising: yard sales, car boot sales, merchandise Bingo’s

Organizational procedures: Public meetings formed a non-profit society and held several annual and general meetings.

Grant Applications: applied for grants, completed a building inspection, completed a survey and most recently and applied for grants from Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Office of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism as well as in kind support from Pictou Regional Development Agency to hire a consultant to provide a detailed report for the MARSA project.

This report outlines the building phases for the project. It provides a proposed business case for Merigomish & Area Recreation and Social Association (MARSA) to provide access to the Merigomish Schoolhouse and Community Eco-Centre- a concept that will enable this facility to become and remain a vibrant, inclusive and essential focus for the surrounding community. To review the report click here.

Here are a few highlights:

Senior’s Program Room: this room is dedicated to providing space for senior members of the community. The sunny side of the building provides an activity room to gather and socialize. It is accessible, with comfortable seating, tables, couches, TV. and audio and has access to the outside gardens.

Community Access Program (CAP) Room: The CAP room would be outfitted with 2 work stations (2 computers).

Merigomish Multi-Purpose Room: The new Merigomish Multi-purpose room/gym will provide space for a variety of needs.  It will be wired and designed as a performance venue. It will allow the eco-centre the added capacity to accommodate larger events and or concurrent overlapping events. As a gym the room can be used as a venue for fitness classes, workshops, craft shows, art shows, farmers market and more.  The room will have a seating capacity of 170 and be theatre style seating.

Where we are now:

It is now time to come together as a community and support this project to make it happen. We must believe we can have such a wonderful complex here at home. It will take all of us to make this happen. We can apply for grants to help us raise the funds but more importantly we need the human resources to jump on board to make this happen. There is something for everyone. If you would like a copy of the plan or want to get involved please call 926-2612 or email
